There are a number of reasons why it is particularly apt that I would be writing about theologian Fr. Hans Küng's latest writings. To begin, we are both 85 years old -- one year younger than that of a former colleague of ours on the Catholic theological faculty of the University of Tübingen, Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. Secondly, I was at Tübingen even before Hans in the late 1950s, as a student working on my doctorate in history from the University of Wisconsin, and my Licentiate of Sacred Theology from the University of Tübingen.

Hans Küng's house on a hilltop outside the German university town of Tübingen, where he has pursued his entire academic career, is full of books -- including, notably, copies of his own titles, amounting to more than 70, of which 50 have appeared in English translation. Often, they have been bestsellers. Applying impressive scholarship, yet in a style that is simple, direct and trenchant -- he has the ability of a great journalist -- he has ventured fearlessly into places that other theologians do not reach.

It is not that what happened in Gumbo was so dramatic. It wasn't. It is not that Gumbo is an example of the worst in South Sudan. It isn't.But Gumbo, a small hamlet just west across the Nile River from the capital of Juba, is emblematic of some of South Sudan's considerable challenges and seemingly intractable problems following months of violence that have resulted in thousands dead, hundreds of thousands -- perhaps as many as 1 million -- displaced and uprooted, and a political crisis that seems to be getting worse, not better.

As a new report from the Center Against Religious Extremism reveals, from 1992-1997 American evangelical groups leading the U.S. domestic fight against LGBT rights also indoctrinated millions of children in the countries of the former Soviet Union, including Russia, through public schools, using a curriculum which promoted the divinity of Jesus and taught that the Bible is literally true and historically accurate.

John Paulk: Proud to Be Ex-Ex-Gay
This week throws its spotlight upon former ex-gay John Paulk, who in the 1990s chaired the board of ex-gay network Exodus International while producing ex-gay propaganda in a full-time job for Focus on the Family. With the support of Exodus and Focus, Paulk and his wife, ex-gay activist Anne Paulk, wrote several books promoting the virtues of heterosexuality and conservative Christianity.

Is the Latter Day Saint Church a Denomination of Christianity?
Last Friday, Latter Day Saint Glenn Beck told Liberty University students that Mormonism is a Christian denomination. While I focused briefly on the Grand Council reference in the speech, blogger James Duncan referenced Beck’s statement about Latter Day Saints and Christianity in his post on Beck’s speech in Liberty’s chapel.
