Clearly the words of the Latvian Archbishop Vanags are misinterpreted - it is not him, who considers Putin a God's messenger, but some of the Latvians. It is written there "they" and in the brackets "the Latvians - IF", meaning that it is the Interfax - the publisher interpretation of Vanags sayings.
The Latvian society is divided. The majority of moderate plus liberal people are happy with Latvia sticking to EU and NATO, it is also reflected in the Parliament elections we just had last Saturday. However, there is a huge Russian ethnic + Russian speaking (other than Russian ethnicity) minority in Latvia - I guess the Latvian Lutheran Archbishop was referring more to them and to the older generation, who long more for the traditional values, that Putin's Russia is so eager to defend.
I also see a contradiction in stance of some Latvians - on one hand they are against Putin's politics towards Ukraine and the aspersion of the Baltic States, constantly accusing them in violating the human rights of the Russian minorities; on the other hand - their sympathies to Putin's traditional family values promotion.
So we need to be careful with our assumptions and the information we read on the net.
